Kansai University OSIP Summer Program in Taiwan

The Kansai University OSIP Summer Program in Taiwan (SCU・CSU–KU OSIP Program: Asia Summer University) was held from August 3 to 19 at Shih Chien University in Taipei and Cheng Shiu University in Kaohsiung. Over 17 days, students engaged in an intensive program that combined academic study with cultural immersion, working closely alongside local Taiwanese students under the theme of Sustainability (SDGs).
During the first half of the program at Shih Chien University (Taipei), participants explored global challenges such as climate change, population dynamics, and technological innovation through lectures and discussions. In mixed teams with Taiwanese students, they investigated local issues, conducted community interviews, and presented their findings in collaborative projects. Their time in Taipei also included cultural activities such as dumpling-making, opera mask painting, visits to Jiufen and Tamsui, and a tour of the Taipei Zoo. A particular highlight was the group’s visit to Siemens Taiwan, where they learned about frontier technologies and industry practices that support sustainability.
In the second half of the program, held at Cheng Shiu University (Kaohsiung), students engaged in new academic themes while also visiting cultural and historical sites. With the dedicated support of Kansai University’s overseas office and the faculty and staff of Cheng Shiu University, participants were able to pursue their studies in a highly supportive and enriching environment.
Through this program, students not only improved their language skills and gained deeper knowledge of Taiwanese culture, but also developed resilience, openness to diverse values, and the ability to communicate their ideas effectively. Experiencing life in both Taipei and Kaohsiung provided them with a broader and more authentic understanding of contemporary Taiwan.
Taiwan is a place where students can encounter a “familiar yet distinct culture,” making it an ideal setting for cross-cultural learning. This program has offered students a valuable first step toward engaging with the wider world, and we look forward to seeing them apply these experiences as they grow from Osaka to the global stage.
